| Scope & Content |
Photograph shows the Hugh Galbraith house which stands at 131 Eighth Street and was built circa 1894. The Galbraith family owned a millworking factory in New Westminster and their home was intended to showcase the woodwork their company produced. The architect of the Galbraith house is unknown. It may have been designed by the Galbraiths using an architectural pattern-book: the house bears a resemblance to a design by H. Hudson Holly which was featured in the 1885 publication "Comstock's House Plans." The house was known as "Westminster House" during World War II when it served as a club and canteen for service men stationed in the city. After the war the Galbraith house was converted into a boarding house. In the 1980's and 1990's the house fell into a state of disrepair and it has since been extensively restored. |
