Photograph of Judge W. N. Bole. William Norman Bole was born in 1846 in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. He came to New Westminster for a temporary visit in 1877 and was called to the bar that year. He was appointed Queen's Council in 1887 and returned a member of the British Columbia legislature for New Westminster. From 1884 to 1889 he was the first police magistrate of New Westminster. Judge Bole was the first lawyer to settle permanently in New Westminster and was the senior member of the Westminster bar. For many years Judge Bole was the first lieutenant of the Seymour Field Artillery and was the captain and commanding officer of the No. 1 Battery, British Columbia Brigade of Artillery. In 1881 W.N. Bole married Florenece Blanchard, the only daughter of Major John Haning Coultard, and they had two sons: Garnet Seymour Bole and J.P. Hampton Bole. Judge W. N. Bole is responsible for naming Belcarra in B.C. Bole Street in New Westminster is named after him. |
