| History/Biographical |
The Vagabond Players were organized in 1937 with ten men and women. The group performed originally in halls, schools and churches, thus acquiring the name "The Vagabond Players." Vagabond Players is not just a troupe that puts on plays as it is also a learning center for people interested in becoming actors, directors, lighting or sound technicians, set designers, and costumers. It's also a place where aspiring writers can present their new work.
In 1951 the city of New Westminster donated to the Players their present home to them which they called "The Vagabond Players Playhouse." In 1997, the Playhouse was renamed "The Bernie Legge Theatre" in honour of a former member. Membership ranges from young to old and they average four plays per year. They have won numerous awards at various festivals for their work.
This interview was given by Isabel Mendenhall the President of the organization in 1997. |
