History/Biographical Doris Barbara Fassbender was born December 2nd 1946 in New Westminster. Doris lived in New Westminster from 1967 to 1981 and has worked for the City of New Westminster since 1989. Doris began roller-skating at the age of 12 and did competitive roller-skating throughout high school. During this time she also began to take up competitive 5 pin bowling. Doris was chosen in 1976 to be the provincial representative at the bowling Nationals in Regina. In this competition she won the Ladies Singles as well as winning with her Ladies team. Doris was 56 at the time of this interview.
Scope & Content This audio recording features Doris Fassbender's experiences as a roller-skater and 5 pin bowler. The recording covers her experiences as a competitive roller-skater and bowler, as well as other experiences related to both sports. It has been divided into 5 tracks.

1. The start of the recording to minute 11: It covers some biographical details. Doris speaks about her history as a roller-skater and describes her time roller-skating at Edmunds Rollerway in Burnaby. She also describes her involvement in competitive freestyle roller-skating in Washington State and all the training she did. She speaks about why she stopped roller-skating and decided not to be a professional skater. She also describes the skating facilities and the differences between the old and the new ones and gives a detailed description of Edmund's Rollerway.

2. Minutes 11 to 22: She discusses going to competitions in Washington and speaks about how the sport is judged. She speaks about getting into bowling and becoming very involved in money leagues. She describes the different tournaments she was involved in and gives a description of what "roll-offs" are. Doris speaks about all her administrative work she put into the sport including being the secretary for Surrey 5 Pin Bowling and B.C. 5 Pin Bowling and helping to host a bowling competition at Expo 86. She also discusses some of the championships that she was a part of and some of the ones that she won including the Ladies Singles and Ladies Team events at the 1976 Nationals. She also describes the process of how one makes it to the Provincial and National championships and becomes a provincial representative. She also describes the atmosphere at the Nationals.

3. Minutes 22 to 30: Doris speaks about turning away from competitive bowling and focusing more on the administrative side of bowling. She describes the Youth Bowling Council and what that has meant for the sport. Doris describes the different bowling facilities that she bowled at including, Lougheed Lanes in Burnaby and Lucky Strike Lanes in New Westminster. Doris also speaks about what she liked most about bowling.

4. Minutes 30 to 40: Doris speaks about some memorable events including more about hosting a bowling competition at Expo 86 and other bowling experiences that have stuck with her.

5. Minutes 40 to the end of the recording: Doris speaks about the different rivalries that developed in bowling. She speaks about some of the changes to the sport and how she is not a fan of these changes because of the way it as affected the game. She explains why she stopped bowling and speaks about the friendships that have developed because of bowling. She talks about the impact that sports have had on her life and the importance of sports to New Westminster. She concludes with some remarks about how she is proud of her accomplishments in sports.
