| History/Biographical |
Stanley (Stan) Allan Stewardson was born October 27th 1938 in New Westminster. Stan was involved in many sports growing up including: softball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. During his time at UBC, Stan had the chance to sign 3 different pro-baseball contracts but decided against it so he could complete his education and become a coach. He was appointed a north-west baseball scout for the Washington Senators (became the Texas Rangers in 1970). Stan coached basketball for high school before going to SFU to coach basketball in 1974. Stan built Simon Fraser University's men's basketball into a winning program in two separate decades. He coached at SFU for a combined nine seasons. His 1986/87 team recorded the best-ever season for a men's basketball team. In 2007, Stan was inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame. Stan was 64 at the time of this interview. |

This audio recording features Stan Stewardson's experiences coaching basketball and playing sports. The recording covers his experiences coaching, as well as, other experiences related to playing sports. It has been divided into 5 tracks.
1. The start of the recording to minute 10: It covers some Stan’s biographical details. Stan speaks about starting to play sports at age 8. He speaks about playing Little League softball in New Westminster and the different positions he played in this league and some of the other leagues he played in. Stan gives a detailed chronology of his baseball career, including his time at UBC.
2. Minutes 10 to 20: Stan speaks about the other sports that he played. He talks in detail about his time playing basketball and why he decided to coach basketball over other sports. Stan gives a chronology of his career as a coach both for high-school basketball teams and University. Stan speaks in detail about his time as coach of the SFU men's basketball team. He also speaks about some of his teams playing and recruiting successes.
3. Minutes 20 to 30: Stan continues his conversation about the two periods in which he coached basketball at SFU. Stan speaks about his relationship with Terry Fox and describes how Terry was an exception individual even before his battle with cancer. Stan also speaks about what the baseball facilities were like when he played in Little League. He describes how much the community would get involved to make sure the facilities were playable.
4. Minutes 30 to 39: Stan continues his conversation about the baseball facilities and community, particularly involving Queen's Park. He describes how the Columbian newspaper was a big supporter of sports and how this would lead to attracting large crowds to games. Stan also speaks about attending the Duke of Connaught and Lester Pearson schools and using the gym at the YMCA. Stan speaks about the impact of the many sports volunteers of New Westminster.
5. Minute 39 to the end of the recording: Stan speaks about what he enjoyed most about his career in sports and why. He also speaks about some memorable events including coaching his son's lacrosse team to a Minto Cup win. Stan speaks about the many friendships that he developed because of sports and more about the influence of the many volunteers in New Westminster that made an impact on his life. |
