History/Biographical The Royal Columbian Hospital was founded in New Westminster in 1862 as a public institution under the administration of the Colonial Secretary. In 1889, the hospital moved to its present location at Sapperton. In 1901, the hospital was incorporated and merged with the Women's Hospital. In 1901, the Nurses Training School was founded. Major additions to the hospital were built in 1912, in 1931 when a new Nurses' Home was built and in 1950 when a new wing was completed.
Custodial History These records were transferred from the hospital to the City of Vancouver Archives in 1973. In 2012, an agreement was reached between the Fraser Health, the City of Vancouver Archives and the New Westminster Museum and Archives. This agreement authorized the transfer of these hospital records to the New Westminster Museum and Archives
Scope & Content The fonds consists of 26 bound volumes of minutes of Board of Directors, 1862-1881, 1909-1950, correspondence, building papers, tenders, purchasing and financial data, publications, reports. Also included are minute books of the New Westminster Medical Association, the Women's Auxiliary of Royal Columbian Hospital and the Building Committee.
