Built as the Russell Hotel for Elijah J. Fader, in 1908. Fader was a businessman whose enterprises included the Pitt Lake Brick and Cement Company. The building was designated in Beaux Arts classical style by the Vancouver firm of Dalton and Eveleigh. Architectural features include: upper bay windows, rose windows, a wide parapet, and a pediment at the roof line marking the building's main entrance. Upon its opening, the building had 80 rooms plus a restaurant and became the preferred venue for social activities. It is built of brick and stone and has 3 storeys and a basement. In later years became the College Place Hotel known as a nightclub spot. See R720.9711 Sc84o B.C. "Once in the Royal City" by Jack Scott. Also: N.W. - Hotels (clipping file). |
