Scope & Content Photograph shows "Pacific Coast Terminals Fire". This photograph was one of the entrants in the New Westminster Public Library's photography contest held from May 15-June 30, 1984. The contest was titled "photograph today for tomorrow", and was held to celebrate New Westminster's 125th anniversary.
The fire occurred on August 21, 1979. It was caused by a burning logsalvage boat that drifted against creosote-covered pilings. The fire swept for about a quarter of a mile under the docks of Pacific Coast Terminals. See Columbian August 31st, 1979, p.1 and September 1, 1979, pA6. The clock tower of the building is visible at left. In July 1983 demolition was begun on the Pacific Coast Terminals, in order to make room for new waterfront development.
