| Scope & Content |
Photograph is a potrait of Alexander Ewen. Alexander and Mary Ewen had 3 daughters: Adelaide (Addy) born in 1877, Isabella born in 1870 and Alexandria (Lexy) born in 1887. The donor of the photo - Isabel Macmillan Latta, is the daughter of Isabella Ewen (later Macmillan).
Alexander Ewen was born in 1832. He was a prominent figure in Queensborough due to establishing his cannery on Lion Island. He also possessed 640 acres of choice agricultural land near his cannery.
The donor noted that Ewen's old cannery was at the site of the C.P.R. station on Columbia Street. As the city expanded there were objections to the smell of the salmon cannery. Ewen moved his operations to Lion Island. In exchange for building a road to his cannery (Ewen Avenue), he was given substantial land holdings in Queensborough. |
