Photograph shows Columbia Street taken slightly west of McKenzie Street, looking east. The Paramount Theatre was formerly called the Edison. The theatre became the Paramount on Feb. 1, 1950. The original Edison was built in 1903 and stood on Columbia near Eighth St. The original Edison stretched from Columbia Street back to Front Street and could hold 600-700 people. A few years later the Edison moved to the 652 Columbia location in this photograph.
This photograph was one of the entrants in the New Westminster Public Library's photography contest held from May 15 - June 30, 1984. The contest was titled "photograph today for tomorrow" and was held to celebrate New Westminster's 125th anniversary.
Across from the Paramount Theatre is the Metropolitan Stores at 641 Columbia Street. This building was built in 1970. On this site stood teh Armstrong and Guichon Blocks which were built in 1899 and burned in 1968. |
