Photograph shows the south side of Columbia Street looking east from McKenzie. The photograph was taken in the winter of 1948 - note the snow on the ground. On the original photograph the date 1948 was clearly visible on the licence plates of the automobiles. According to the donor, the photograph was taken from the window of the Stride Studios across the street. The woman who gave him the photograph was employed by Stride Studios at the time. Looking from the foreground of the photograph the following are visible:: The Sally Shops (at the intersection of McKenzie and Columbia), Spotless Cleaners, and Copp the Shoe Man. The signs on Copp Shoes read as follows: Front sign - "The Doorway of economy where good shoes are cheap.", Sign at the side - "We specialize in solid leather work boots". Other businesses are: the Royal City Cafe, Sanguine's Jewellers (watches-diamonds), Donald J.R. Shoe Rebuilding, Drugs (small wrap-around sign), B.C. Electric Building, the 3-storey David W. Spencer block (sign on front saying "Eaton's"), the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and the sign for the Columbia Theatre. |
