| Scope & Content |
Photograph shows the bridge with its damaged span. The old span was toppled on December 26, 1975 by a runaway log barge, the "Swiftsure Prince. Winds up to 40 knots ripped the barge from its moorings and propelled it upriver where it rammed into the span. The bridge had a centre swing span for ships. At the time of the accident, the bridge was being crossed by up to 1800 railway cars a day, including those from Canadian National Railway, Burlington Northern and B.C. Hydro. The bridge was opened on July 23, 1904. For more information see V.F. N.W. - BRIDGES which includes articles from the "Province" April 22, 1976, p.23, and February 25, 1976, p.17, and the "Columbian" January 7, 1976 p3. |
